AI Prototypes: Designing Trustworthy Smart Interfaces

Exploring prototyping for AI โ€” from uncertainty and trust to ethical, human-centered systems.

Role
UX Strategist / Product Designer with AI focus
Tools
Figma, Sketch, Wizard of Oz prototyping
Duration
Ongoing exploration through MIT coursework

The Challenge

Prototyping for AI is fundamentally different from traditional UX design. Users need to understand and trust AI decisions, but traditional prototyping methods don't capture the uncertainty, variability, and adaptive nature of intelligent systems.

The gap: Traditional UX prototyping assumes predictable interactions, while AI introduces dynamic responses that require new approaches to design and testing.

Design Process

Our human-centered approach to AI prototyping

Research & Discovery

Studied AI outputs and user expectations, emphasized transparency mechanisms to build trust in intelligent systems.

Wireframes & User Flows

Created low-fidelity screens showing AI-driven journeys, mapping out decision points and feedback loops.

Wizard of Oz Testing

Simulated AI responses manually for rapid iteration, testing user reactions before building complex systems.

Core Design Principles

Building trust through transparency, control, and ethical considerations

๐Ÿ”„

Feedback Loops

Show AI confidence scores and reasoning to help users understand system decisions.

๐Ÿ‘ค

Human Override

Allow users to correct or ignore AI suggestions, maintaining user agency and control.

โš–๏ธ

Ethics First

Address bias, privacy, and explainability from the ground up in every design decision.

Key Hypothesis & Outcomes

๐Ÿš€ The Trust Formula

Explainability + Confidence Scores + Human Override = Higher Trust in AI Output

By making AI decisions transparent and giving users control, we can build systems that users actually trust and want to use.
